Bay and Bow Windows: Structure, Space, and Cost

Bay and bow windows both project outward from an exterior wall, but a bay uses three windows set at angles while a bow uses four or more equal-size windows to form a gentle curve. The difference changes the shape, the interior space, and the amount of light.

Bay and bow windows are the two styles that push out past the wall to create a projecting nook inside. They are often confused, but the distinction is straightforward once you count the windows and look at the shape. That structure drives everything else, from how much floor space you gain to how much light comes in.

How a bay window is built

A bay is the angular of the two styles. Pella explains that bay windows usually have three windows: a big, fixed one in the middle and two smaller, angled ones on the sides that can open. The center picture window frames the view while the flanking sashes handle ventilation.

How a bow window is built

Interior space and light

Because both styles project past the wall, they add usable room inside. Pella notes that a bay's layout not only looks good but also adds a little extra room inside, which many homeowners turn into a reading nook or window seat.

Light is where the two diverge. Pella states that bow windows let in more natural light than bays, a result of using four or more panes across the curve, and that the bow is great for creating cozy seating areas thanks to its wide, panoramic view.

What the energy label reports

A bay or bow is a multi-panel assembly, but each glass unit still carries the same energy ratings as any other window. ENERGY STAR explains that the NFRC label reports U-Factor, which measures the rate of heat transfer and tells you how well the window insulates, and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which measures the fraction of solar energy transmitted. Lower U-Factor means better insulation, and lower SHGC means less solar heat let in.

The U.S. Department of Energy adds that upgrading to ENERGY STAR qualified windows can save 7 to 15 percent on annual household energy bills, roughly 71 to 501 dollars a year depending on geographic location and the type of window being replaced. Those savings apply to the glass in a bay or bow just as they do to a single window.
