Sliding Windows: Wide Openings and Maintenance

Sliding windows, also called gliding windows, move horizontally along a track instead of swinging or lifting. Their horizontal shape suits wide openings, and with fewer moving parts they are simple to maintain.

A sliding window is essentially a double-hung turned on its side, with one or more sashes that glide left and right along a track. That layout makes it a natural fit for openings that are wider than they are tall, and for spots where a window that swings outward would be in the way. The same track design is why a slider seals differently than a casement.

How a sliding window operates

Andersen offers a simple way to picture a slider: imagine a double-hung window flipped 90 degrees and you will have a good idea of what a sliding window looks like. The moving sash slides along a track to open, as opposed to opening outward like a casement or awning window.

Andersen also describes the gliding window as having two side-by-side sashes that slide to open. Because nothing swings out, the window stays flush with the wall on both the inside and the outside.

Wide openings and space savings

The sliding window's horizontal orientation is its defining strength. Andersen notes that with their horizontal orientation, sliding windows can fill a large space with a single unit, which is why they are common over kitchen sinks and in rooms that call for a wide, low window.

Because the sash never projects outward, a slider also fits where a swinging window would not. Andersen points out that with their flush opening, sliding windows can fit well next to narrow decks, patios, or balconies.

Maintenance and cleaning

Sliders keep upkeep simple by keeping the mechanism simple. Andersen states that with fewer moving parts, sliding windows have a design that requires less upkeep over time, and elsewhere notes a slider is easier to maintain due to its simpler design, with fewer moving parts and pieces.

There is no crank hardware to service and no counterbalance system like a double-hung uses, so routine maintenance is mostly keeping the track clean so the sash keeps gliding smoothly.

How a slider seals and what the label reports

Because a slider seals along a track rather than compressing shut, it seals differently than a casement. Marvin explains that a casement's locking mechanism pulls the sash in tight to compress the weather stripping, and that sliding and double-hung sashes are less airtight because they lack that mechanism. This is why the Air Leakage number on the NFRC label is worth checking on a sliding window.

ENERGY STAR defines Air Leakage as the rate at which air passes through joints in the window, with a lower value meaning less leakage, alongside U-Factor for insulation and SHGC for solar heat. ENERGY STAR notes these ratings must be independently tested, certified, and verified, so they give a like-for-like way to compare one slider against another.
