What Marvin publishes
Marvin organizes its lineup into collections and leans on fiberglass. On its windows page the company describes the Elevate collection as offering the most in-demand traditional window and door types with natural wood interiors and Ultrex fiberglass exteriors, and the Essential collection as a streamlined selection featuring proprietary Ultrex fiberglass inside and out.
On sealing and air infiltration, Marvin states that air infiltration is rated by the ASTM E283 test, which measures how many cubic feet of air pass through the window per minute, and advises buyers to look for numbers lower than 0.30 cfm per square foot to meet minimum standards. Marvin reports that its Ultimate Casement Window comes in at less than 0.01 cfm per square foot, and explains this is because the casement locking mechanism pulls the sash in tight to compress the weather stripping.
What Milgard publishes
Milgard publishes detailed thermal data for its vinyl V400 Tuscany Series. Its thermal chart lists U-Value, SHGC, and VLT for each operating style and glass package. For a Single Hung with SunCoatMax low-E, a fourth-surface coating, and argon fill, the chart shows a U-Value of 0.25 and an SHGC of 0.19, a combination the chart marks as qualifying for ENERGY STAR 7.0 in the Northern, North-Central, and South-Central zones and for California Title 24.
The same chart shows Milgard's clearer glass packages running higher, for example a Single Hung with SunCoat and clear interior glass and air fill at a U-Value of 0.33 and an SHGC of 0.29. The range across the chart shows how much the glass package, not just the frame, drives the final energy numbers on a Milgard vinyl window.
Where they differ on paper
The documented difference starts with material. Marvin publishes around Ultrex fiberglass and natural wood collections, while the Milgard data here is for a vinyl V400 Tuscany Series product. That is a different material class aimed at a different budget, so the two brands are not describing the same kind of window.
The two also disclose different numbers. Marvin foregrounds air infiltration measured by ASTM E283 and reports a casement figure of less than 0.01 cfm per square foot, while Milgard foregrounds U-Value and SHGC by glass package, down to 0.25 and 0.19 on its best-performing configuration. Both point toward ENERGY STAR qualification, but they publish different sides of the energy label, which is why the only apples-to-apples comparison is the full NFRC label on the specific models you are quoted.
