An energy-efficient window is defined by numbers on its NFRC label, chiefly U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, chosen to match your climate. ENERGY STAR reports that replacing single-pane windows with certified units lowers household energy bills by an average of up to 13 percent nationwide. This guide explains each rating and the climate-zone logic behind it, with every figure tied to the source where it appears.

U-factor: how well a window insulates

U-factor is the headline insulation number. The NFRC consumer guide describes U-Factor as the amount of heat inside your home that can escape through a window, rated on a scale of about 0.10 to 2.00, where a lower number means less heat loss.

ENERGY STAR frames the same metric as the rate of heat transfer, noting that a lower U-factor means the window insulates better. In heating-dominated climates, a low U-factor is the rating that matters most.

SHGC: how much solar heat gets in

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures solar heat. The NFRC consumer guide describes SHGC as the amount of solar heat that can enter a home through a window, rated 0.00 to 1.00, where a lower number means less heat gain.

ENERGY STAR describes SHGC as the fraction of solar energy transmitted, telling you how well the product blocks heat from sunlight. In cooling-dominated climates, a low SHGC keeps summer heat out and is the rating to prioritize.

Visible transmittance and air leakage

Two more ratings round out the label. The NFRC consumer guide describes Visible Transmittance as the amount of solar light that can enter through a window, rated 0.00 to 1.00, where a higher number means more natural light.

Match the ratings to your climate zone

ENERGY STAR sets U-Factor and, where applicable, SHGC requirements based on climate zone. The Building America Solution Center maps four ENERGY STAR window zones to IECC zones: Northern covers zones 5 through 8, North-Central covers zone 4, South-Central covers zone 3, and Southern covers zones 1 and 2.

A federal tax credit has been available for the most efficient windows, described by ENERGY STAR as 30 percent of product cost up to a 600 dollar maximum for products meeting the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient criteria, effective for purchases between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2025.
